The unusual Umbria of Flaminia Vetus

Via Flaminia: Discover the Ancient Heart of Hidden Umbria

A Journey Along the Via Flaminia

The route of the ancient Via Flaminia has marked the destiny of the territories crossed for centuries, so much so that today it can be the ideal common thread of our itineraries. Following its route, an absolutely new Umbria is revealed where cities and villages surprise for the perfect conservation of the historic centers and for an ever-changing and evocative landscape. Massa Martana, Bevagna, Todi, Assisi, Perugia, Foligno, Spello, Nocera Umbra, Gualdo Tadino and Gubbio constitute a living fabric where the Flaminia intersects with the other ancient roads that have made Umbria a land of passage, of meeting and clash between different cultures and civilizations: Etruscans, Umbrians and Romans to begin with... and to follow, after the crisis of the Empire and the barbarian invasions, the triumph of communal civilization and the Renaissance up to the contemporary age. Come and discover the beating heart of our beautiful Italy against the backdrop of uncontaminated nature between the Tiber Valley, the Martani Mountains, the Umbrian Valley and the Apennines.

Day 1

Day 2

Massa Martana / Bastardo / Todi / Massa Martana

Breakfast at the hotel

Guided excursion to discover the panoramas and archaeological suggestions of the Fonnaia Bridge, whose state of conservation and size make it one of the most surprising opportunities to visit together with the Catacombs in the “Grotta Traiana” area.

Afterwards there is a stop at the Benedictine abbey “Villa San Faustino”. Inside there is the sarcophagus which according to tradition belonged to San Faustino and whose memory attracted the Benedictines.

Moving from the territory of Massa Martana to that of Bastardo, we note the presence of an ancient Hospitium between Vicus Martis and Mevania/Bevagna at the intersection between the Via Flaminia and the Via Tuderte. Worth mentioning is the famous Devil’s Bridge, truly impressive in size.

Guided tour duration: approx. 3 hours

Return to the hotel for lunch.

In the afternoon: guided tour of Todi, city of the ancient border “Between Umbrians and Etruscans”

Massa Martana was the main hub that led from the Flaminia Vetus in the direction of the Via Amerina heading towards Todi, a sentinel city dominating the Tiber Valley and this further route which played a fundamental role in Umbria.

Guided tour duration: approx. 3 hours

Visit to a winery in the famous Todi countryside.  Dinner in a characteristic restaurant in the historic center.

Return to the hotel in Massa Martana and overnight stay

Day 2

Day 3

Massa Martana / Bevagna / Foligno / Perugia

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure from the Hotel for an excursion between Bevagna and Foligno in the heart of the Umbrian Valley.

Starting from Massa Martana the route comes to dominate the Umbrian Valley with its perched and fortified villages, from Giano dell’Umbria to Gualdo Cattaneo to discover Bevagna and the straight road that connects it with Forum Flaminii, the Foligno Plain and the Valley del Topino to then embrace the entire range of the mountains on the opposite side where Assisi, Spello and Trevi stand out.

Lunch in the heart of the Umbrian countryside… among Sagrantino vineyards and olive groves to taste regional specialties in the family environment of an oil mill or a winery.

Afternoon: discovering Foligno. The ancient Forum Flaminii does not coincide at all with current Foligno, rather connected with the Umbrian center of Fulginiae along the eastern branch of the Flaminia.

To pursue the historical memories of ancient Fulginiae it is necessary to visit the City Museum which is located in the splendid setting of Palazzo Trinci*, an opportunity to open up to absolutely surprising experiences of the early Renaissance in Foligno.  Santa Maria Infraportas, the medieval tannery district, the Cathedral and the palaces of nobility and power.

Full day guided tour

Day 3

Day 4

Perugia

Breakfast and loading of luggage for the last day of our tour.

Perugia, positioned on the top of two hills, sometimes seems to hide its heritage which, upon closer inspection, is truly remarkable. From the routes to discover the “Underground Perugia” – do not miss the visit of the Rocca Paolina with its historical stratifications from the Etruscan era, through the Middle Ages and Renaissance up to the Risorgimento period – the city reveals some of the most beautiful and celebrated panoramas of the Umbria.  Cross and experience its pulsating “heart” starting from Piazza Italia, Corso Vannucci with its noble residences and arriving at Piazza IV Novembre with its most beautiful monuments: the Fontana Maggiore by Giovanni and Nicola Pisano, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Sala dei Notari and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo.
